How the AC System Works

Air conditioning systems work on a principle called “phase transition.” As a refrigerant gas vaporizes, it absorbs heat; when it returns to a liquid state, it dissipates heat.

Air conditioning systems are comprised of five major components:

  1. the compressor
  2. condenser
  3. receiver/drier
  4. the expansion valve
  5. the evaporator.

Without going into detail, these parts circulate the refrigerant and drive the phase transitions.

Things to Know About Maintaining and Repairing your Car Air Conditioning

  • When your AC is not cooling you off: We will first check is if the ac system parts are working properly, and if the ac refrigerant levels are low.
  • If refrigerant levels are low: We will look for a leak in the refrigerant. Your vehicle’s air conditioning system is a closed loop; that is, refrigerant is not actually consumed in the air conditioning process. Recharging a leaking system is a waste of money and bad for the environment, so we’ll need to fix the leak first. Furthermore, an AC system with too much refrigerant even by just a few ounces will not function as efficiently as one that is properly charged. So, we’ll make sure the levels are optimal for your vehicle.
  • When you smell a bad odor from your car AC: This indicates bacteria growth and you will need an ac service tune up to clean out the harmful germs.
